Occupy Wall Street: City councilman observing protest gets roughed up by NYPD

New York Police Department officers have arrested almost 200 people at the Occupy Wall Street protest, CBS News reported,  and a city councilman who had already been critical of the NYPD's tactics ended up getting pushed. Councilman Jumaane Williams was "nightsticked in the leg" by NYPD officers, according to the NYCLU

And one witness posted an image to Twitter of Councilman Williams appearing to be getting shoved by an NYPD officer. In a statement to New York Magazine, a spokesman for Williams said that the councilman was at Zuccotti Park as an observer. "In the midst of a police action involving one protester, two NYPD officers approached the Council Member and pushed him while he tried to explain his purpose at the park. He was neither arrested nor injured during the incident," the spokesman told the magazine.

Before the incident occurred, Williams tweeted that he felt that the NYPD was making some unfair arrests: "Have seen #NYPD show restraint. Have also witnessed some very questionable arrests at #OWS."

Making matters more awkward for the NYPD is that this has been Williams' second run-in officers during his time as city councilman. At last year’s West Indian Day Parade, NYPD officers put Williams in handcuffs and detained him. Williams was never charged and the police officers involved were disciplined, the New York Daily News reported. The NYPD declined to comment to the Daily News about this more recent incident.
