1945: After World War Two, Japan's occupation ends, the Soviet Union sends troops to the north, and the US sends troops to the south. Korea divided by the 38th parallel.
1946: Kim Il-sung, "The Great Leader," installed by the Soviet Union as North Korea's leader.
1948: Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) announces sovereignty. Soviet troops withdraw.
1950: South Korea announces independence. North Korea invades South Korea.
1953: After armistice negotiations and 2 million dead, the Korean War ostensibly ends. A peace treaty was never signed, so technically, the war never ended.
1994: Death of Kim Il-sung. Kim Jong-il, or "Dear Leader," succeeds as North Korea's dictator.
2009: North Korea test a nuclear bomb underground, its second.
2011: Kim Jong-il dies. Kim Jong-Un becomes the "Great Successor," and North Korea's leader.
