Police arrested a woman accused of attempting to kidnap a newborn baby girl from her mother's hospital room, NBC Los Angeles reported
The suspect was identified as 48-year-old Grisel Ramirez, of Garden Grove, Sgt. William Allison with Garden Grove Police Department told NBC.
CBS is reporting that the suspect wore hospital scrubs and a visitors pass and entered the maternity ward of Garden Grove Medical Center on Monday morning.
She was questioned by a nurse but was able to access patients rooms on the fifth floor. Ramirez allegedly suggested a mother take a shower before a doctors visit, Garden Grove Police Lt. Jeff Nightengale told CBS.
While the mother was in the shower, Ramirez placed the baby in a large tote bag and tried to leave the hospital. An electronic tag attached to the baby's ankle was activated as Ramirez tried to leave the hospital. "An alert employee at the hospital heard the alarm go off, confronted her, stopped her, detained her until we arrived at the location," Nightengale told NBC.
The baby was not injured and is with her mother.
