Lake Gleneida in New York state
Boaters in New York state made a grisly discovery today, finding a 6-year-old girl clinging to a woman's corpse in the middle of a lake.
The New York City Department of Environmental Protection identified the woman Tuesday as 59-year-old Pamela Kaner of Brewster, New York, The Associated Press reported.

It's not yet clear what happened, but Kaner was seen wading in Lake Gleneida with the girl shortly before the drowning was reported.
Kaner, a friend of the girl's mother, was watching the girl while her mother ran an errand, The News-Times reported.

Two men and a woman in a row boat found the child clinging to Kaner's corpse and crying for help in the middle of the Putnam County lake at around 5 p.m. Monday.
The boaters initially thought the girl was hanging onto a large plastic bag, but realized it was a body upon closer inspection, The Journal News reported.
They put a life vest on the child, brought her to shore and called 911, according to the AP.
An autopsy on the woman was planned.
