New Black Panther Party leader arrested after offering $10,000 for Zimmerman’s capture

A high-ranking member of the New Black Panther Party was arrested Monday for possessing a gun, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Police said Hashim Nzinga had pawned a FN Herstal 5.7 x 28 handgun. That alleged transaction is illegal because Nzinga was convicted of a felony last month, the Dekalb Sheriff's Office told the Journal-Constitution.

The New Black Panther Party, an organization that has been denounced by the original Black Panther Party, made headlines this week after offering $10,000 for George Zimmerman's capture. Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, shot and killed Trayvon Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old, on Feb. 26 in Sanford, Fla. Zimmerman claims he was acting in self-defense and has not been arrested.

Amid public outcry, Florida Gov. Rick Scott announced last week that State Attorney Angela Corey of Jacksonville would take over the investigation into Martin's death, the Florida Times-Union reported.

But the New Black Panther Party has protested that decision and asked that Corey be replaced.

"Angela Corey is no good for this case," members of the black activist group told WOKV. "She has a track record of destroying lives in the black community."

ActionNewsJax reported that another group called the Southern Christian Leadership Conference also opposes Corey's appointment. Both organizations protested on Monday.
