The student, 20, from Korea, was killed after he laid down in a sandpit that was at least six feet deep at a Southern Californian beach.
A day at a Californian beach turned to tragedy for a group of students yesterday.
Authorities said a 20-year-old exchange student from Korea was buried alive after he lay down in a 6-foot-deep sandpit he and some fellow students had dug.
ABC News reported the tragedy happened yesterday afternoon at Oxnard Beach, in Southern California.
The local fire department said in a statement that students from Masters College had dug the pit while spending the day at the beach.
CBS News said the man climbed into it and was taking a photograph as he lay down when it collapsed onto him. His friends tried frantically to free him until firefighters arrived.
Firefighters immediately began digging with tools and hands, but it took 15 minutes to free him.
Emergency personnel performed CPR but he could not be resuscitated.
Authorities said they were waiting to notify relatives in Korea before releasing further details.
