Jacole Prince, mother of 32-pound girl locked in closet, arraigned (VIDEO)

A 29-year-old Missouri woman accused of locking her malnourished 10-year-old daughter in a closet made her first court appearance Monday.

Jacole N. Prince was ordered held on $200,000 cash bond during the hearing in Jackson County Court, The Associated Press reported.

A judge entered a not guilty plea for Prince, who is charged with assault, child abuse and endangerment after police found her 32-pound daughter standing in a closet, blocked by a portable crib and tied off with small rope on Friday, Kansas City TV station KMBC reported.

Officers had received an anonymous call to check on the girl, who was home alone at the time.

Prince had taken the girl's younger sisters, ages 2 and 8, out to breakfast. The younger girls were clean and well-fed and have been taken into protective custody, according to the Kansas City Star.

Investigators aren't sure why the girl was singled out for abuse, although a probable cause statement stated the mother told police she didn't let the girl leave the house because the child is malnourished and she would "get in trouble if someone saw her," according to the AP.

Investigators said the girl, whom they described as exceptionally sweet, tried to smile the entire time she talked to police.

“She seemed to really want to please everyone,” police Sgt. Roy Murry told the Kansas City Star.
