With the April 17 tax deadline fast approaching, the Internal Revenue Service reminded taxpayers of some last minute tips and mistakes to avoid.
File electronically – This will save you the rush at the post office or worry over pickup times. The Washington Post reported that the IRS even has a way for those with an income of $57,000 or less to file for free using a third-party tax preparation service. Those which are still available with a fee online include TurboTax, H&R Block. Other free programs include TaxAct Online or TaxSlayers, for simple returns.
Check the address – Check the form's instructions or the IRS website for where to send your return.
Check your identification numbers – Verify your Social Security numbers on the forms.
Remember to sign – You have to sign and date your income tax return. If married, both spouses must sign a joint return, even if only one earned income.
Check your tables – When you use the tax tables to check how much you owe, be sure to check the correct column for your filing status.
Fill in information clearly and review all figures – These two seem like pretty common sense advice. Math errors are common on paper returns, and unclear handwriting can effect your refund.
Attach required forms – Those filing by paper have to attach their W-2s and other forms to the front of their returns. The forms should be attached in the order shown in the upper right-hand corner.
Request an extension – If the deadline is really beyond reach, taxpayers can request a filing extension using Form 4868 which will give them until mid-October and prevent any late filing penalties. Tax payments are still due on April 17, however.
