"Cyclists beware – there are two crazy people driving around Sydney, who do NOT like cyclists," Moore wrote.

Then joking: "Yesterday afternoon the guy on the right threw a battery at me, and then got out of the car and punched me. I suppose that's assault and battery?"

A commentator from the news.com.au website remarks that the incident has struck a cord with about 4,000 Sydney cyclists, many of whom have viewed the photograph of a distinctive dark red Mitsubishi with "traffic" scrawled on cardboard license plates.

Moore claims that police have refused to follow up on his complaint until he can properly identify the car.

"I'm not particularly interested in pressing charges, but what I would like to say is if they can be identified it would be great to meet up with them and have a beer and maybe have them ride bikes around Newtown for a week or so – they'd probably like it," Moore told The Age.

The newspaper says that Mr Moore's account of the alleged attack had been read more than 15,000 times by Tuesday morning, suggesting the car and its occupants would soon be identified.
