Hilary Rosen apologizes for Ann Romney comment

Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen apologized on Thursday afternoon for her "poorly chosen" words concerning Ann Romney, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's wife, according to The New York Times.

Rosen sparked controversy when she said Romney's wife had "never worked a day in her life," while appearing on CNN's Anderson Cooper 360, causing Ann Romney to tweet her response: "I made a choice to stay home and raise five boys. Believe me, it was hard work."

Rosen said, "I apologize to Ann Romney and anyone else who was offended. Let’s declare peace in this phony war and go back to focus on the substance," according to The Times. She said she was responding to Romney's "poor record on the plight of women's financial struggles."

In her original comments on CNN, Rosen said, "This isn’t about whether Ann Romney or I or other women of some means can afford to make a choice to stay home and raise kids. Most women in America, let’s face it, don’t have that choice."

The Romney campaign and Ann Romney's defenders tried to label Rosen an "Obama adviser."

During a press conference held today, Sen. Kelly Ayotte said, "I represent New Hampshire in the United States Senate. I also am the mother of two children. And I think it was very insulting for President Obama's adviser, and DNC strategist Hilary Rosen to make the comment she made about Ann Romney yesterday, that she never worked a day in her life. It's insulting that the president's adviser would dismiss the value of the hard work women do when raising children," according to Slate.
