Dan O’Leary, Texas city manager, lays himself off

Dan O’Leary, the city manager of Keller, Texas, announced today that he had laid himself off so that the city can put its limited money to better use, the Associated Press reported. Not paying his salary will save the city about $176,000.

In an interview with KRLD NewsRadio 1080 today, O’Leary explained he didn’t have enough work to do, CBS News reported. “Quite honestly, in some respects, I could tell the days were getting a little longer and I was getting a little more and more bored,” he said.

"It's a little unusual for a city of our size to have three city managers," O'Leary told the Keller Citizen. "There was a time that was needed, but at this point in time, I don't think we need three city managers." O’Leary’s two assistant city managers, Steve Polasek and Chris Fuller, help him manage the Fort Worth-area city of about 40,000. O’Leary said he will recommend that either Polasek or Fuller get his job, the Keller Citizen reported.

Asked by KRLD NewsRadio 1080 why he didn’t cut one of his underlings instead of himself, O’Leary said, “I couldn’t do that. These two guys are top notch, and as I say, they’re largely responsible for what success I’ve had here.”

O’Leary, 57, said he was not planning to retire, even though he qualifies for a pension from the state’s municipal retirement system, the Keller Citizen reported.

His last day as city manager will be April 20, CBS News reported.
