Cory Booker, Obama surrogate, backs away from comments (VIDEO)

President Barack Obama’s campaign had to do some damage control on Monday after high-profile supporter Newark Mayor Cory Booker said on Sunday that he was “very uncomfortable” with the anti-Bain Capital ads the campaign had launched, according to ABC News.

Appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Booker, a media savvy Democrat, said, “If you look at the totality of Bain Capital’s record they’ve done a lot to support businesses, to grow businesses. And this, to me, I’m very uncomfortable with,” referring to the Obama campaign’s ads attacking Republican candidate Mitt Romney’s record at the private equity firm, according to ABC News.

He added, “This kind of stuff is nauseating to me on both sides. It's nauseating to the American public. Enough is enough. Stop attacking private equity, stop attacking Jeremiah Wright,” according to MSNBC.

Obama’s re-election campaign has sought to highlight Romney’s tenure at Bain as a profit-making venture instead of an example of job creation as the Romney campaign would like to have it viewed.

Booker took to social media to clarify his stance, first with a tweet:

He followed it up with a four minute video providing context to his words on “Meet the Press,” saying, “I get very upset when I see such a level of dialogue that calls us to our lowest common denominators and not the kind of things that can unify us as a nation and move us forward as a nation,” according to The Hill.

Booker also backed away from the comments on Romney’s Bain Capital tenure, stating, “Mitt Romney has made his business record a centerpiece of his campaign, he's talked about himself as a job creator and therefore it is reasonable and in fact I encourage it for the Obama campaign to examine that record and to discuss it.”

Harold Ford Jr., the former Democratic Representative from Tennessee, said on Monday, “I would not have backed off the comments if I were Mayor Booker,” reported Politico.

Appearing on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Ford said, “The substance of his comments on ‘Meet the Press,’ I agree with the core of it. I would not have backed them out… private equity’s not a bad thing. As a matter of fact, private equity is a good thing in many, many instances.”

Ford added, “I understand as a surrogate for the campaign, you have to have one of your key and most eloquent and most effective surrogates at least clarify or at least bring context to his statements,” according to Politico.

The Washington Post noted that the Obama campaign is rolling out another Bain attack ad today, focusing on Ampad, a paper company that had one of its plants shut down, costing 250 jobs.
