Carnivorous women linked to the success of mankind

Eating meat was the key to the expansion of the human race, according to a new study.

The research, from the University of Lund in Sweden, found that females that were able to get a high nutrient, high quality meat diet allowed them to stop breastfeeding and continue reproducing children.

Women generally do not have a second child until they have finished breast-feeding their first child.

Fox News reported that humans and animals stop breastfeeding when they reach a certain developmental stage – a stage much faster in carnivores.

The study looked 67 species of mammals, including humans and apes and found that there was a correlation between eating meat and length of breastfeeding.

"Eating meat enabled the breast-feeding periods and thereby the time between births to be shortened," said Elia Psouni, lead author of the study, according to the Daily Mail.

"This must have had a crucial impact on human evolution."

According to Science Daily, the study showed that the weaning period in humans and other mammals with regard to brain composition and diet were the same.

The study did not discuss the impact of meat-eating in modern society.

The study was published in the scientific journal PLoS ONE.
