A homeless man in Kansas City, Missouri who returned a diamond engagement ring to its rightful owner after she accidentally dropped it into his coin cup has received $100,000 in donations since his good deed.

Billy Ray Harris was sitting on The Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri, last week when Sarah Darling walked past and gave him what she thought was a handful of change, KCTV5 reported.

When she discovered her ring missing, she remembered she had put it in her coin purse earlier in the day.

Luckily Harris had found it among the change he had received that day, and hoped the owner would return for it.

"The ring was so big that I knew if it was real, it was expensive," Harris told the local television station.

Darling was shocked and jubilant when she found that Harris had kept it in safe keeping, and said it seemed like a miracle.

To show their appreciation the couple set up an online fundraising page for Billy Ray Harris on giveforward.com.

Almot 4000 donations and messages of praise have poured in from around the globe, totalling more than $100,000, CNN reported.

They included a $20 donation from Chris and Mel, of Brentwood, England, who wrote: "In life what goes around comes around… Billy – your sweet actions, despite being in dire straits yourself, prove that there is humility in the world… you are one shining example. Lots of love from across the pond."

Harris told CNN he can't believe the response and didn't deserve so much money.

"What I actually feel like is, 'what has the world come to when a person who returns something that doesn't belong to him and all this happens?'" Harris said.
