Uruguay same-sex marriage law comes into force

It’s official: gay couples can legally tie the knot in Uruguay after the country’s same-sex marriage bill came into effect on Monday.
Within hours of the law coming into force, Rodrigo Borda, 39, and Sergio Miranda, 45, became the first gay couple to register to marry.
Uruguay, which allows abortion on demand and is on the brink of legalizing marijuana, is the second country in deeply Catholic Latin America to pass a same-sex marriage law.
Argentina passed a similar bill three years ago.
President Jose Mujica, a former left-wing rebel, signed the same-sex marriage legislation in May, but it took 90 days to come into effect.
