After a 6-year court battle, a Russian billionaire is about to lose half (yes, just half) of his fortune. Poor thing.
AS Monaco Football Club owner Dmitry Rybolovlev laughs as he holds a present from Prince Albert II of Monaco during a ceremony to celebrate the end of the 2012-2013 football season on May 31, 2013 in Monaco.
It’s been described as the most expensive divorce settlement in history.
Russian billionaire and AS Monaco Football Club owner Dmitry Rybolovlev has been ordered to pay his ex-wife a staggering $4.5 billion — or nearly half of his immense fortune.
The Swiss court ruling was made public this week following a six-year battle over the terms of their split.
The court in Geneva, where Elena Rybolovlev lives, also awarded her custody of their 13-year-old daughter and about $129,000 a month to raise her.
Because, you know, it’s tough to pay for violin lessons when you’ve only got $4.5 billion.
Marc Bonnant, the lawyer representing Elena, said his client was pleased because she got “exactly” what she asked for in “the most expensive divorce in history.”
“Never has an oligarch judicially had to discharge such a debt to his wife," Bonnant was quoted as saying.
Rybolovlev, who is known as the “fertilizer king” after making his fortune from the sale of two Russian fertilizer companies, not surprisingly plans to appeal the decision.
Forbes ranks Rybolovlev as the 149th richest person in the world with a net worth of $8.8 billion.
The couple tied the knot in 1987, but their marriage collapsed in 2008, sparking a nasty fight over their luxurious assets, which include a Palm Beach mansion once owned by Donald Trump, islands in Greece and Hawaii and a bunch of antique furniture.
This is the Palm Beach mansion.
The reports about the court ruling made no mention of a pre-nuptial agreement and given the size of the settlement it’s probably safe to assume there wasn’t one.
