At least 31 same-sex couples planned to marry on Monday in New Zealand, the first courty in the Asia-Pacific region and only the 14th in the world to legalize gay marriage.
The Marriage Act amendment was passed in April, but it took effect on Monday.
Campaign For Marriage Equality spokesman Conrad Reyners applauding all the newly wed couples.
"A massive congratulations to the happy couples tying the knot today. Marriage equality has finally arrived in New Zealand," he said.
Many same-sex couples from Australia have suggested they plan to travel to New Zealand for wedding ceremonies, according to the Australian Marriage Equality lobby group.
Reverend Matt Tittle, who married one of the same-sex couples, said the day was "history in the making."
