Mother, aunt of Georgia baby murder suspect arrested for lying

The mother and aunt of De’Marquise Elkins, the teen suspected of fatally shooting a baby in his stroller, have been arrested on suspicion of lying to police.

Elkins' mother, Karimah Elkins, 36, and aunt Katrina Elkins, 33, were booked on charges of making false statements to police and concealing facts or providing fraudulent documents in matters of government, Glynn County police told NBC News.

It is unclear what false statement the pair made to police but Katrina Elkins told the Associated Press on Saturday that her nephew was at her house all morning and was with the family when the baby and his mother were shot.

"He was with us the whole time," the aunt told AP. "There is no doubt in my mind that he is innocent."

After their arrests, both women gave statements that helped lead police to a saltwater pond where they found a handgun. The gun is being tested to see if it was used in the shooting.

"We arrested them last night and brought them back to headquarters, where we afforded them the opportunity to make additional statements," Glynn County police chief Matt Doering said Tuesday.

"They did, and that information led us to other witnesses … (who) led us to an area where the gun was disposed of.”

De’Marquise Elkins, 17, is currently in jail on murder charges after allegedly shooting both 13-month-old Antonio Santiago and his mother Sherry West while they went for a morning walk near their home in Brunswick.

Dominique Lang, 15, was also arrested as an accomplice in the shooting.
