Enjoy the sweet sound of 83,000 Australian rugby fans booing Prime Minister Tony Abbott

If Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott was wondering how people felt about him, he just got an answer from 83,000 Australian rugby fans. It wasn't pretty.

Abbott was making a customary post-game appearance yesterday at the Grand Final of the National Rugby League (NRL) — the South Sydney Rabbitohs beat the Canterbury Bulldogs by 30-6 to end a 43-year streak without winning the league, if you're interested — when the crowd welcomed him with about as much warmth as the audience at Barack Obama's inauguration welcomed George W. Bush

Why would these sports fans — or as they'd call themselves, sport fans — be so mad at the prime minister? There are many reasons to be fed up with Abbott that most of the 83,000 fans probably have at least one or two.

It could be his policies on energy, science, and the environment: allowing logging in national forests, delisting protested environments, repealing carbon and mining taxes, abolishing the Climate Commission and defending environmental agencies, cutting funds for scientific research, and culling sharks.

It could also be his social policies: opposing same-marriage and abortion, funding religious programs in public schools, imposing draconian anti-immigration practices, and pushing for an unpopular budget filled with massive cuts to healthcare, education, social welfare programs, and the arts.

Whatever their individuals gripes, these 83,000 Australians had a single, defeaning message for Abbott.

Boo.
