A Catholic priest and his vicar were murdered in Veracruz state, in eastern Mexico, in the early hours of Friday, various media reports said Saturday.

The diocese of Tuxpan identified the victims as Rev. Hipolito Villalobos, the head of the Ixhuatlan de Madero parish, and vicar Rev. Nicolas De la Cruz.

Their bodies were found inside the living quarters of the parish.

There were no details on how the men were killed or the possible motive for the murders.

The reports said four people have been detained for questioning.
