Earlier this year, we asked for your creative New Year’s resolutions. We heard from hundreds of people, and we’re following four aspiring artists all year. Gabriel Walker of Maysville, Kentucky, is a sound designer and teacher, but his first love is music. He resolved to move to Louisville, form a band, and play a six-song showcase by the end of the year.
Over the last several months, he’s been writing songs with Jenrose Fitzgerald, a Louisville musician. “She’s a brilliant singer, brilliant lyricist, writes wonderful songs,” Gabriel says. “We’re musically on the same page. This is the kind of creative partnership I’ve been looking for forever.” One of the songs they’ve written over email and telephone is called “Yesterday,” which you can hear in the audio above.
But it’s been a long-distance collaboration. Recently Gabriel met Jenrose in person on a visit to Louisville. “I just think that there is a creative vibe here,” she says. Feeling “culturally starved” in Maysville, Gabriel agrees that Louisville is where he needs to be. “And sushi!” he adds. “I know there’s sushi in this town.”
