Partytime in T-Minus 14 days, people.
Coz Ov Moni 2: FOKN Revenge, the world’s second first pidgen musical, makes its U.S. premier two weeks from today at Williamsburg’s Cantina Royal.
After meeting the FOKN Bois on our last trip to Ghana, Afropop Worldwide became enamored with the duo’s savvy sound, earthily ribald humor (read: South Park-esque), and biting satire. So over the past few months, we’ve been working hard behind the scenes to bring a little FOKN to the US and turn on a few New Yorker’s to the top-tier Ghanaian music they didn’t know they’d been missing their whole lives.
Auteurs though they may be, FOKN Bois are first and foremost rappers who spit hilarious, hot fire, and the soundtrack to Cos Ov Moni 2 is as good as any other entry in their oeuvre. Does this collection start off with a track about diarrhea, which includes some suitably chilling sound effects? It certainly does. But does the rest of the album also feature an impressive roster of some of Ghana’s finest contemporary hip-hop and pop stars? Sweet melodies, tasteful programming, and deep bass? Beats that span the gap between Nelly, Sting, and the Super Nintendo Donkey Kong Country OST? Yes, yes, a thousand times yes!
Just as They Might Be Giants’ zaniness and Blowfly’s absurdity never distract from their genius, so goes FOKN Bois’ crude (read: earthily ribald) comedy. That indelible sense of humor has done the Bois well, and hints at just how good their feature film is. We’ll be screening the original Cos Ov Moni right before the premier of the second installment, so you won’t be lost, and after Part 2, we’ll dance to the rest of the FOKN Bois catalog. Plus, this whole shindig is going down at Cantina Royal’s La Sala room, where there’s a bar full of adult beverages. That means Friday Night + FOKN Bois + Afropop + Laughs + Drinks + Dancing = See you there.
