Ding Jinhao Was Here: What Defacing a 3,500-Year-Old Relic in Egypt Means in China

The World

Fifteen-year-old Ding Jinhao didn't know what he was getting into when he scrawled his name onto a 3,500-year-old stone sculpture at an ancient temple in the city of Luxor, Egypt.

Another Chinese tourist saw the etching and horrified by her countryman snapped a photo and posted a picture of the vandalized relic online.

Ding Jinhao then became the target of Chinese internet vigilantes. The episode has raised a conversation in China about etiquette when traveling abroad.
