Greta Gerwig’s Musical Crush
Greta Gerwig, the face of mumblecore and the star and co-writer of Frances Ha, recently stopped by the studio to talk about the newest-oldest trend in movies: black-and-white. I was charmed by her exuberance and sincerity — she is as earnest and adorable off-screen as she is on. As is 360’s custom, after the interview, I asked her to leave a souvenir in the form of a cultural snapshot.
Gerwig admits she just got around to reading Old School, Tobias Wolff’s novel of prep school life; her sister has been prodding her to do so for years. She enjoyed the Jacques Becker movie Antoine and Antoinette, which also happens to be in black-and-white.
She says Roxy Music’s Avalon “might be my favorite record of all time.” Her devotion to the band’s front man Bryan Ferry is so strong that it moves her to song — and just when I thought I couldn’t love her more, she sings. Listen above.
