NYC marathon kicks off under tight security
Runners race in the New York City Marathon on November 3, 2013. One of the most famous marathons in the world, canceled at the last minute in 2012 because of Superstorm Sandy, started with approximately 45,000 participants and strengthened security measures after the bombing of the Boston Marathon in April 2013.
Runners took their mark in New York City at the start of the annual marathon. The race was back after taking a year's break in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy that devestated parts of the Eastern coastline.
Police and extra security were in full force after the deadly attacks at the Boston marathon in April.
But the razor-tight security was not enough to dampen the spirits of the runners or the spectators at the 26.2-mile-route.
More than a million people were expected to turn out on the chilly Sunday to watch some 45,000 runners complete the race through all five boroughs of New York City.
