Many parts of Tskhinvali now lie in ruins: apartment buildings with gaping holes in their sides, other homes that have burnt to the grounds. There's the shells of two burnt out Georgian tanks that Russians say attacked Russian peacekeepers at the start of this conflict. It's one reason for the ferocity of the response. Thousands of people have fled Tskhinvali, and those who remain have no water or electricity and all the refugees blame Georgia and on its president. Many people feel Ossetia has no future in Georgia. The Russian military say Georgian snipers are still hiding out in the town.
