Fishermen protest rising fuel prices

The World

On Friday, Spain’s entire northeast Mediterranean fleet will join a Europe-wide work walk out, but Spain’s Atlantic fishermen have already begun to protest in earnest. This union leader says for two months now no one has made a dime because the cost of oil is so high. Governments are suggesting ideas and today British Prime Minister Brown said the UK would consider increasing oil production and also diversify energy supplies. But increasing fuel supplies will take time and yesterday France’s President called on Europe to take more immediate action like cutting taxes. Consumers across Europe are already suffering and food prices continue to climb as well, and it’s affecting the supply of fish in markets as well. European fisherman want protection from foreign fish that’s now creeping in on the vacant market left by their protests.
