The International Olympic Committee has announced that transgender women will be banned from competing in women’s events at the Olympic Games, under new rules coming into force from 2028. The decision will require all athletes seeking to compete in the female category to undergo a one-off genetic screening test, and is expected to intensify one of the most contentious debates in global sport.
