New recordings of sounds made by reptiles, amphibians and fish suggest that vocal communication among vertebrates originated roughly 400 million years ago. Host Marco Werman speaks with Dr. Gabriel Jorgewich-Cohen of the University of Zurich in Switzerland, lead author of the study, “Common evolutionary origin of acoustic communication in choanate vertebrates,” just published in the journal Nature Communications. The study recorded vocal communication in 53 animals widely regarded as silent creatures.
