Ukrainians struggle to convey the grim realities of war to their loved ones in Russia

War continues in Ukraine with a steady flow of grisly news: apartment buildings bombed; a maternity ward destroyed; nearly 3 million Ukrainians refugees. But Russian state media shows an alternate version of reality, one where Russia is “iberating” Ukrainian cities from what the Kremlin calls Nazis in a so-called “peacekeeping” mission. Ukrainians with families watching Russian state media propaganda say they’re living a reality their loved ones may or may not believe — including Maria Moroz, an event planner who fled the city of Kharkiv. Every day, she video calls her relatives in Crimea, hoping to show them the truth that they won’t see on TV.
