Over the past two weeks, we’ve been staying in touch with people in Ukraine. Many of them had to hurry to makeshift shelters and subway stations during Russian bombardments. One of those people is Maia Mikhaluk. She’s with her husband and daughter in Kyiv. Her daughter is expecting a baby any day now. March 8 — International Women’s Day— was traditionally a big holiday in the Soviet Union. For many Russians and Ukrainians, it still is. Mikhaluk told us she’s never been a huge fan of Women’s Day, but Tuesday’s holiday did prompt her to send us some thoughts.
