Dr. Amani Ballour had just graduated from medical school when Syrian forces laid siege to eastern Ghouta, an area in the suburbs of Damascus, in 2013. Faced with casualties from frequent airstrikes, Ballour sprang into action. She helped set up and run an underground hospital.
