When Colombian police discovered that university guards had killed at least 11 waste pickers so that their bodies could be sold to a medical school, there was national outrage. The people who collect garbage for recycling organized to change how they are paid and how they are treated. Today, waste pickers are officially recognized as part of the municipal waste system.
