After the armistice that created North and South Korea, the countries were in ruins. Hundreds of thousands of children were left orphans. Initially, church groups were rescuing orphans but over several decades it turned into a massive business enterprise. Filmmaker Deann Borshay Liem was adopted by a white American family when she was 8. The division between North and South is the same kinds of separation that Liem feels being separated from her homeland.
