The White Helmets, also known as the Syrian Civil Defense, began as small volunteer group at the start of Syria’s civil war. Slowly, it grew into a much bigger, skilled organization that saves lives on the ground. Today, the group is helping with the rescue efforts in the wake of the region’s 7.8-magnitude earthquake.
