Thai plant vaccine

The World

As in much of the world, Southeast Asians have watched in frustration as affluent countries swim in COVID-19 vaccines — all while less-powerful countries wait in frustration for vaccines to come their way. This inspired two researchers in Bangkok to get creative. They have synthesized a plant-based COVID-19 vaccine made from tobacco leaves. The dream is to produce a cheap COVID-19 vaccine for Southeast Asians — removing the region’s reliance on Western pharma giants, not just for COVID-19, but for any future pandemics. The World’s Patrick Winn reports.
