Taiwan’s ‘parallel situation’ with Ukraine has the island on alert

Across the world, all eyes are on Ukraine. But people in Taiwan are watching extra closely. The de facto independent nation also knows a thing or two about invasion — or at least the threat of it. Beijing says the island belongs to China and can use force to take it. Whether the US military would jump in to stop such an invasion is unclear. Taiwan’s leaders are now closely analyzing the Ukraine crisis for clues about American loyalty. The crisis is forcing President Tsai Ing-wen to make the case to citizens that their island is more vital to the US than Ukraine — and that they shouldn’t panic when they see America’s military keep its distance.
