Residents in Shanghai were counting down the seconds until the strike of midnight last night. People were celebrating in the streets as Shanghai’s COVID-19 lockdown ended. Traffic, pedestrians and joggers reappeared on the streets of Shanghai after a strict two-month lockdown. However, life isn’t back to normal for all of Shanghai’s 25 million residents. About half a million people live in parts of the city still under lockdown. Since the start of the pandemic, China’s zero-COVID-19 policy has faced scrutiny.
