Seals mapping uncharted waters in Antarctica

The World

This winter, scientists aboard an icebreaker in Antarctica attached temperature sensors to a dozen seals. For the next year, they’ll chart the layer of warm water that’s reaching West Antarctica’s glaciers and melting them. The goal is to better understand if — and how fast — this region’s glaciers will collapse, potentially pushing up global sea levels roughly 11 feet. The World’s Carolyn Beeler reports in her ongoing series from Antarctica.
