Irish airline RyanAir, popular for its cheap city-hopping flights, has begun requiring a language test for passengers carrying South African passports. Only 13% of South Africans speak Afrikaans, a language that emerged from colonial Dutch. For many in the country, it’s associated with the recent history of apartheid and colonial oppression under white minority rule. The move has been criticized by the South African government among others, including Dinesh Joseph, who had to take the test on a return flight from vacation in the Canary Islands. Joseph shared his experience with host Marco Werman.
