The Romanian blouse, known as the IA, is one of the best-known symbols of traditional dress in Romania. Henri Matisse painted it and famous designers like Tom Ford and Oscar de La Renta have featured it in their collections. Last December, UNESCO granted it special cultural heritage status. But all the attention has led to the mass production of fake replicas in China and India which threaten to put Romania’s traditional industry out of business.
