Reunited after the Cultural Revolution

The World

Here’s a story about old childhood friends, reunited after decades apart. There’s a historical twist. These two were separated by China’s Cultural Revolution of the 1960s and 70s. It was a time of great upheaval when young people were being forcibly relocated for “re-education.” Two years ago, our partners at the BBC profiled a man who escaped from all that by swimming from the Chinese mainland to Hong Kong, which was then under British control. A childhood best friend heard his story — and that led to an unlikely reunion.
