Return to Kuku Island

In 1979, some Vietnamese refugees were dropped off on a remote Indonesian island called Kuku. When they got there, there was nothing there — no refugee camp, no food or medical supplies. For months, they had to fend for themselves, until the Red Cross came to help. Many of them died. Carina Hoang was 16 when she was on the island. She’s gone back several times to help others find the graves of their loved ones. Recently, she made what she says will be her last trip back to Kuku. Liz Mak of Snap Judgment has her story.
