Pompeo tests China with moves toward Taiwan

If the US and China have any hope of getting along, Beijing has warned the US must never treat Taiwan as an independent country. In Beijing’s eyes, the island belongs to China — even though Taiwan effectively runs its own affairs as an independent democratic state. And the US has respected China’s demands for four decades. But now Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is upgrading diplomatic ties between the US and Taiwan. The World’s Southeast Asia correspondent Patrick Winn has the story.
