A lot of the news about the Sahel region in West Africa these days is about the horrific violence caused by terrorist groups. A new film about that crisis had its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month. “Sira,” by Burkinabe filmmaker Apolline Traoré, tells the story of one woman’s journey to survive and seek vengeance after a terrorist attack. It was recently selected to represent Burkina Faso for next year’s Oscars. The World’s Halima Gikandi reports.
