A trial has just gotten underway in Brooklyn that is being closely watched in Mexico. Genaro Garcia Luna, who ran Mexico’s version of the FBI, is accused of taking millions of dollars in bribes in exchange for granting protection to the Sinaloa drug cartel. The trial of Garcia Luna could reveal unsavory details about the US-supported war on drugs in Mexico, which has claimed more than 300,000 lives since 2006. Marco Werman speaks to Ioan Grillo, a Mexico City-based journalist who specializes in drugs and organized crime.
