Residents of the southern Ukrainian port city of Mariupol are melting snow to collect water and cooking dwindling food supplies on open fires. Dmytro Gurin is a member of parliament for Kyiv who grew up in Mariupol and has been in touch with friends and relatives there. He tells The World’s Marco Werman that Russian troops are attempting to starve the city’s residents to get leverage in the war.
