In Uzbekistan, mass protests over the weekend led to government suppression, violence and death. Uzbek government officials said that 18 people were killed and more than 240 people were wounded. The protests broke out in Karakalpakstan, a semi-autonomous republic in northwest Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev declared a monthlong state of emergency in Karakalpakstan.
