Mali sanctions

One of Africa’s biggest economic blocs has sanctioned Mali for dragging its feet on open elections. In 2020, a military coup ousted the former president, in part because he allowed French troops to remain stationed in the country. The military junta that took his place said it would chaperone the country towards its next elections, which have yet to take place. Yesterday, the junta announced that instead of needing 18 months before holding elections, it would need five years. ECOWAS, one of Africa’s largest economic and political blocs, has sanctioned Mali for failing to follow through with elections. The World’s Carol Hills talks to reporter Ridwan Karim Dini-Osman about the sanctions.
