Look what the whale dragged in

A local biologist on Spain’s Canary Islands was performing a routine necropsy on a dead sperm whale beached on La Palma. Standard procedure. But what wasn’t standard was what he pulled from the beast’s colon, a 22-pound waxy chunk of what’s known as ambergris. The bowling ball-sized glob has a street value of some $550,000. Who would pay that much? Perfume makers. The World’s Gerry Hadden reports.
